EXPLORING THE NATURAL HISTORY OF BAJA CALIFORNIA THROUGH EDUCATIVE HIKING, SURFING, PHOTOGRAPHY, AND OVERLANDING ADVENTURES

Gulf of California (Sea of Cortez)

Few other regions outside Mexico’s Gulf of California offer the opportunity to experience and explore such an intricate web of nature that weaves together so many different coastal ecosystems on such a dynamic scale. The nearshore islands, coves, and desert fjords are one of the planets ecological hot spots for marine life. Here we dive, literally and figuratively, beyond Steinbeck’s Sea of Cortez, into the origins of this desert sea, and explore the geologic, ecologic, and indigenous influences which make this coastline unlike any other, a true Galapagos of the north.

Central Pacific Coast

Spanning the Valle de los Cirios naturally protected area, and the Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve, the central pacific coastline of Baja California encompasses some of the largest naturally protected regions in Mexico due to their high levels of biodiversity and endemic flora and fauna. Due to the cool California ocean current which glides along this coastline, and warm inland temperatures over the central desert, evaporated sea water and ocean spray condense into thick fog which results in a fog desert. This is one of a handful of these unique ecosystems which happen to span our globe.
